Everybody needs a piece of scrap paper… On the paper you need to describe yourself in 11 words – you must not write your name! Can we guess who people are from their 11 words description? How did it feel like to describe yourself in only 11 words? Did you feel like you could describe all aspects of your personality?

What Jews believe about God is very simple… It’s only 11 words long! It’s a creed, called the ‘Shema’, which is the Hebrew word for ‘Hear’. In 11 words, it sums up the main Jewish belief about God: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.’ It tells us some key things about what Jews believe about God… What 2 names is a Jewish God given? Is Judaism monotheistic or polytheistic? How do you know? Can you sum up what Jews believe about God in less than 11 words? The Shema is originally written in Hebrew: ‘Shema Yisrael, Adonia Elohenu, Adonai Echad.’ It is the first Hebrew that a Jewish child learns & it is meant to be the last thing that a Jew says before death. The Shema is part of the Jewish holy book – what is it called?
