1 Task 30.3 P3 – Demonstrate the correct use of three different types of equipment used in outdoor and adventurous activities, with tutor support M2 – Independently demonstrate the correct use of three different types of equipment used in outdoor and adventurous activities The following is a guide to the depth and breadth of knowledge that you will need to successfully complete this task. There is an onus on yourself to question and ask questions at every available opportunity; e.g. when taking part in practical activities.

2 LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR TASK 2 Be able to use equipment used in outdoor and adventurous activities Equipment: types eg. clothing, footwear, technical equipment, safety equipment, teaching and instructing aids, situation specific, site specific, Use; Related legislation eg health and safety; related regulations eg personal protective equipment (PPE). European conformity (CE); eg manufacturer governing body, Health and Safety Executive (HSE), associations, industry bodies; working practice eg related to operation, dismantling, storage

3 METHOD OF COMPLETING THE TASK - First Part It is important that you will have a thorough knowledge and understanding of your chosen equipment. The equipment’s ‘field’ e.g. it’s purpose, what does it do? Is the equipment necessary? History of equipment’s field e.g. what type of equipment was used before? Background of product, where is it produced; since when? What materials are used in it’s construction?.e.g. Gortex Health and safety issues; Are there any Government legislations it should meet ? European conformity? YOU WILL HAVE TO DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH Notes and instruction to help you will be shown in italic and placed at the bottom of the slide. You will present this knowledge as a PowerPoint presentation hand-out.

4 METHOD OF COMPLETING THE TASK – Second Part It is important that you have a thorough knowledge and understanding of your chosen equipment before starting the demonstration. In order to complete this task you must be able to fully demonstrate the following with a practical demonstration setting up of the equipment the correct use of the equipment safety issues regarding the equipment servicing and storage You will present this knowledge as a PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATION.

5 HOW TO CHOOSE THE EQUIPMENT It is important that you will have a thorough knowledge and understanding of your chosen equipment. THEREFORE You must have knowledge of; The equipment’s ‘field’ e.g. it’s purpose, what does it do? Be able to handle and examine the equipment. Be able to use or know somebody who has used the equipment. Be able to find appropriate and substantial information. Be able to demonstrate it in use. Be confident enough in your knowledge to give a demonstration and talk on the equipment to the rest of the class. YOU WILL HAVE TO BE PREPARED TO DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH

6 The product that I have chosen to demonstrate today is a small, compact but powerful lightweight stove. MSR PocketRocket Ultralight Introducing the product this way gives a clear indication what you will be talking about.

7 MSR or the Mountain Safety Research Company of Seattle have been producing Mountaineering equipment for forty years. The PocketRocket Ultralight is one of the most popular lightweight stoves amongst Professional Mountaineers and regular trekkers*. GO ON TO EXPLAIN WHAT IT’S USED FOR - do we really need it? This will show that MSR are a reputable and highly regarded company. History of the stoves shows that it is tried and tested. Winning Awards shows it has gained trade recognition. Useful for not burning food DOES IT WORK AT ALTITUDE? Need to know if mountaineering at altitude? DOES IT WORK WHEN IT’S WINDY? CAN YOU STILL USE IT WHILST WEARING GLOVES?
