Parts of a Flower These are the main parts of a flower.

Petals Petals attract insects and help to protect the other parts of the flower.

Sepals Sepals protect the flower while it is still a bud. Sepals are usually green or brown.

Nectary The nectaries make nectar. They are in the center of the flower. Nectar is a sweet substance, which insects drink to give them energy.

Carpel/Pistil The carpel is the female part o the flower where seeds are made. It has three parts: stigma, style and ovary. – The stigma is sticky to catch the pollen. – The style holds up the stigma. – The ovary contains the ovules (or “eggs”). FEMALE

Stamen The stamens are the male parts of the flower. Stamens make pollen. Pollen is a yellow powder that is needed to make a new plant. Each stamen has two parts: the anther and the filament: – The anther produces the pollen. – The filament holds the anther up. MALE

Receptacle The receptacle is where the parts of the flower are attached.
