2. As we begin this unit on Imperialism. So far this year, we have focused mainly on United States DOMESTIC policy. This unit will “switch gears” and focus on the United States Foreign Policy. To review, let’s make sure you understand the difference between the two

Review: George Washington’s Farewell Address GEORGE WASHINGTON, Farewell Address, Sep. 17, 1796  “However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.”  What does Washington warn against in this quote?  ANSWER: He is warning against creating and joining political parties. He feels they will in the end destroy the very democracy we have created with fighting.

6. “To contract new debts is not the way to pay old ones.”  What does Washington warn against in this quote?  Answer: Be careful what you do with the money and make sure to pay back old debts before taking on new debts

7. “Beware of foreign entanglements and alliances. Beware of foreign affairs and stay involved only in domestic issues to the best of this nation’s ability. Foreign issues and usurpation of foreign territory will simply bring devastation.”  What does Washington warn against in this quote?  Answer: He warns the country from staying out of foreign affairs. He says that they will bring great harm to our country if we get involved. He says to focus on things at home and ignore problems abroad.
