THE SOLAR SYSTEM Created by: karen Karr Instructor: Christin Spurlock

2 What is the Solar System?
The solar system is the sun together with all planets and other bodies that revolve around it.

3 Planets that make up the Solar System
Here are the planets that make up the Solar System in order from the sun. Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune

4 Inner Planets within the Solar System
Inner planets within the solar system are smaller planets and made up of rock and metal. These planets include Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.

5 MERCURY Mercury is the first and closet to the Sun and the smallest in the Solar System

6 VENUS Venus is the 2nd planet from the sun close to the size of earth, but much dryer and denser.

7 EARTH Earth is the third planet from the sun. It is the largest of the inner planets and the only planet where life is known to exist.

8 MARS Mars is the 4th planet from the sun. It is smaller than Earth and Venus’ atmosphere and is made mostly of carbon dioxide.

9 Quick-Quiz!!!! Now it is time for you to answer some questions about what you have learned so far. Define solar system…. The solar system is the sun together with all planets and other bodies that revolve around it. How many planets are in the solar system? 8 Try to name those planets in order from the sun? Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune What are the characteristics of inner planets? Inner planets within the solar system are smaller planets and made up of rock and metal. Name the inner planets of the solar system. These planets include Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. If you answered correctly good Job. If not, go back and review the information again.

10 Outer Planets within the Solar System
Outer planets within the solar system are bigger planets. Jupiter and Saturn are called gas giants because they are composed of hydrogen and helium. Neptune and Uranus are called iced giants because they are composed of ices, including water, ammonia, and methane.

11 JUPITER Jupiter is the 5th planet from the sun. It has 2.5 times the mass of all other planets together.

12 SATURN Saturn is the 6th planet from the sun. Saturn has a ring system and is the least dense planet in the solar system.

13 URANUS Uranus is the 7th planet from the sun. It is the lightest of the outer planets and the only planet that orbits the sun on its side.

14 NEPTUNE Neptune is the 8th planet from the sun. Neptune is smaller, but more dense than Uranus.

15 Quick-Quiz!!!! Now it is time for you to answer some questions about what you have learned!!! What are the characteristics of outer planets? Outer planets within the solar system are bigger planets. Name the inner planets of the solar system. Jupiter, Saturn, neptune, and uranus Which two planets are called gas giants and why? Jupiter and Saturn are called gas giants because they are composed of hydrogen and helium Which two planets are called iced giants and why? Neptune and Uranus are called iced giants because they are composed of ices, including water, ammonia, and methane. If you answered correctly good Job! If not, go back and review the information again.
