History The very first films were presented through Thomas Edison’s Kinetoscope, a one-shot film. What is a short film? Also called a short subject, a short film is a complete but brief treatment of a subject rendered into film. Lasts somewhere from 20 to 40 minutes. Filmmakers in other countries utilize the short film to make their films shorter. Usually are filler for feature length films

Cleveland International Film Fest The annual film festival in Cleveland, Ohio started in 1977 consisting of only 8 films over 8 weeks. Since then, it has grown to a very popular event where filmmakers show their films, ranging from different countries and many types of films. In 2013, the festival consisted of 178 feature films and 164 short films. Looking at that number, short films are definitely important and relevant in today’s world.

Types of Shorts These include, animations 2D and 3D, documentaries, experimental, musicals, and travelogues. Animated shorts are popular as fillers before feature length and usually go with animated features. Experimental films look at innovative styles of filmmaking Travelogues can explore a place in under 45 minutes

Animated Shorts Probably one of the most popular kinds of shorts. Some great examples include: Silly Symphonies produced by Walt Disney Productions had 75 total from 1929-1939. Documentaries Early film was dominated by showing an event and were called “actualities” because they portrayed something real. Used as propaganda films during WW2 Cinema verite was dependent on some technical advances in order to exist. Some popular feature length docs are Fahrenheit 9/11 and Supersize Me.

Musical Shorts Also known as musical featurettes Nearly 2000 Vitaphone short subjects were used ranging from opera singers, Broadway stars, and dancers. Became popular on TV when feature ended and musical footage was used to fill gap “Soundies” an early version of musical video and were three minutes in length usually.
