Rhea Randhawa Mr. O’Brien Period 3

Global Conflicts in the 20 th Century Overview: During this time period, there were fatal wars like World Wars I and II. Both were instigated by conflicts that lead to severe feelings of nationalism. In World War I, a Serbian nationalist assassinated Franz Ferdinand, the archduke of Austria-Hungary. World War II began when Hitler invaded Poland to increase the land for the “Aryans” as Hitler believed they were the superior race. The 20 th century was a time of realization for many nations as they went through economic difficulties, wars, and internal conflicts within their governments.

Germany in World War I Germany got involved in Word War I, because they were allied with Austria and Serbia called Russia who then called France for support. Germany did not want to fight on two fronts on opposite ends. It would be a hard war to fight if that were to be the case. They already had plans of invading all European countries since the time of Bismarck, and this gave them the perfect opportunity to do so. Germany then declares war on France and the war began.

Results of World War I The people were led to believe that their government (Weimar Republic) was the reason they lost the war and that they were too weak to stand up and not pay the debt. France and Britain forced Germany to pay reparations. Their military was limited.

Germany in World War II Adolf Hitler, a wounded veteran of the World War 1, blamed the economic problems on the allies who had forced the peace terms on Germany. In jail, Hitler wrote the book Mein Kampf in which he told his life story and about his goals for the future of Germany, including those violent prejudices toward the Jews. Placed Jews in concentration camps because made people believe they were the reason Germany lost World War I He came to power after the death of Hindenburg. His Nazi army was a well prepared army with improved technology and they used a Blitzkrieg tactic. World War II begins when Germany invades Poland because they felt that they needed to unify the Volk and that the “Aryan” race was superior to other races.

Results of World War II Allied fighter jets carpet bombed cities, killing many, including civilians. The nation was financially destroyed, due to the Nazi's desperate spending to feed the war machine. The nation was looked down upon because of their cruelty during the Holocaust.

Important Event in the 20 th Century One very important event in the history of Germany in the 20 th century includes the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was put up to separate the communist rule of the Soviet Union, East Germany, against the capitalists in West Germany. The fall of the Berlin Wall signifies the end of the Cold War and the reunification of Germany as a united nation.

Document Proof This image says “Freedom” which shows that the people of Germany are glad to live as one nation. As opposed to living apart based on differences in beliefs of economic ideologies.

Globalization of Culture/Economy Germany held the Olympics in 1936. This was a significant moment because the Nazi flags were all around Germany and it did not help the Germans gain much support. During World War II, the Nazi Party was very strong, and this new government did no have support which led them to extremes like the second world war and

Regional Trade Networks Germany had a role in NAFTA and they were able to better the economy of other nations due to their production growth. They were a part of NATO In the European Union, Germany most wanted peaceful collaborations with their neighbors. These increasing political objectives sparked after World War II

Role in United Nations Germany was admitted into the United Nations in 1973. Admitted a bit late due to relations between other European nations especially France and Britain. They had and continue to have good relations with the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federation.

Chaotic or Progressive? The 20 th century was both for Germany. They went through two World Wars and a global depression. Many countries felt the need to take control of the businesses during the depression and it resulted in an even bigger problem. However the progressed very well in terms of their improvements in technology.

Progressive Technology During World War II, Germany had many advancements in weapons and they were able to use during war. They also had new fighting techniques, such as Blitzkrieg.

Outside Voices France Books that have images of the war in France. Germany was destroying innocent people in the nation. These images show both perspectives, the reactions of the French and how people in Germany felt or reacted. The French were very frightened and they did not know how to respond to this violence. The people in Germany were most likely against France because they forced Germany to pay reparations and that brought down the economy. http://digicoll.library.wisc.edu/cgi-bin/History/History- idx?type=turn&entity=History.Fragments1.p0001&id=History.Fragments1&isize=M

Outside Voices United States after World War II They were willing to help East and West Germany under NATO in which they were able to help Western Europe. However due to the Warsaw Pact, East Germany denied any assistance in defeating the spread of communism.
