Thus far in class, we have discussed the Regions of Texas, The Native American Groups in Texas, and Christopher Columbus and the Columbian Exchange What now? LET’S PUBLISH A BOOK!

We are going to write a book over the European Exploration of Texas! The book will contain our notes over the Spanish and French Explorers, biographies, and other aspects of European Exploration A BOOK?!

Get out your paper(s) you picked up on the way into class We first need to create a name for our book Think of something more creative than mine! Make sure it follows the theme of European Exploration SO LET’S BEGIN!

The book will talk about European Exploration from the beginning of CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS to the establishment of SPANISH MISSIONS. We will identify the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, AND WHY the Europeans discovered Texas Our OBJECTIVE of writing this book is to provide the reader with a better understanding of how Texas was first DISCOVERED and where it’s history began Write something on the blank space at the bottom to describe the author (YOU!) Christopher Columbus: WHO? An Italian Explorer. WHAT? While searching for a quicker trade route to Asia, he landed on a New World, filled with new people and natural resources WHEN? 1492 WHERE? From Spain Americas (Bahamas) IMPACT ON TEXAS (WHY)? He started the Age of Exploration and ignited the Columbian Exchange PAGE 7

Who: Alonso Alvarez de Piñeda The year 1519 was very important for Alonso Alvarez de Piñeda and for Texas. What: Piñeda sailed along the Texas coast toward Mexico. During his journey, he created the first maps and charts of the coast. When: 1519 Where: Gulf Coast!!! Impact/why: Because of Piñeda, future explorers knew where to sail to get to Texas.

Define the Columbian Exchange: The Exchange itself refers to the widespread transfer of animals, plants, disease, technology and ideas between the Europeans and people located in the Americas. Take a second to ask yourself who benefited the most from the Columbian Exchange: PAGE 8
