ENGINEERING DESIGN What’s it all about? What will we do this semester?

Engineering is a Creative Process Build on existing knowledge Make something where nothing existed before Problem solving Teamwork Communication

Palm Jumeriah Monorail-Dubai

Coordination – electrical, mechanical, structural, construction at 48C (118F)

Communication with the Client and the Professional Staff Norwegian engineer Thai consultant Japanese contractor French system integrator UAE - Dubai owner

Projects are Fun, But …. Communication is Essential!!!

Engineering Challenge 2014 Work in teams to solve a problem (I) Solutions require knowledge of engineering concepts Creativity and collaboration is encouraged

Past Challenges Wind turbines Carpet climb Remote Amphibious Recovery Vehicle

Wind Turbines

Build Robot to Climb a Carpet Build a device to climb a carpet to the next floor Coe Library

Remote Recovery Vehicle Design a Submarine or Surface Ship

2014 Challenge - Design a Dynamic Water Slide

University Risk Management Student life insurance waiver must be signed in advance Student health does not cover near misses Suggested that we find a new project

Truth in Advertising We aren’t going to do this. The idea was on the internet After it went viral, the developers confessed that it was not real. People were trying it, because… If it is on the Internet, it must be real! Believe half of what you see.

2014 CHALLENGE Solar Cooker Design The ES 1000 Engineering Challenge for 2014 is for teams of students to design and test a solar cooker. We will test with both artificial light and true sunlight (provided the sun is out in Laramie on October 11 th !)

2014 CHALLENGE (cont) How much heat can 8 ounces of water absorb in 30 minutes? The oven must include a method to adjust its angle toward the light source while keeping the jar of water level. Design notebook must be kept and turned in on the day of the challenge. More details will be given in class.
