Allegory A story in which the characters and events represent an underlying truth about life Denouement Refers to the resolution of a story or plot Motif A recurring subject or theme in a work of literature Pathos The part of the story that makes the reader feel sorry for the characters

Paradox A statement that seems to go against common sense, yet it is true Conflict The problems and complications of a story Exaggeration Stretching the truth Description The use of words to draw a clear picture of a person, place, or thing

Didactic The didactic meaning of literature is its message or moral Analogy A comparison of two or more objects Context The context of a word or phrase refers to the words around it

Empathy An author’s ability to feel like a character in the story and to portray these feelings Dramatic Monologue A passage that reveals the character of the speaker by his comments to himself or to another character Antithesis An exact opposite. Used to contrast ideas in the same sentence Parallelism The use of related words or phrases in a pattern

Poetry The rhythmic construction of vivid and imaginative words written to please the ear Symbol A concrete object used to represent an idea Antistrophe The repetition of words at the end of sentences for effect Anaphora The repetition of words at the beginning of sentences for effect
