The Analog Clock An analog clock is a clock that has two hands on it and numbers 1-12 on the clock face. 12 3 6 9 1 2 4 5 7 8 10 11 An example of an analog clock.

Hands of an Analog Clock
A “hand” of an analog clock is the arrow that points to a number on the clock. An analog clock may have 2 or 3 hands. We will study two of them in this lesson. 12 3 6 9 1 2 4 5 7 8 10 11 The arrows that are circled are the hands of the clock.

The Hour Hand The hour hand is the shorter hand on an analog clock. It tells what hour it is. 12 3 6 9 1 2 4 5 7 8 10 11 The circled hand is the hour hand. But what is the other hand called?

The Minute Hand The minute hand is the longer hand on an analog clock. It tells what minute it is. 12 3 6 9 1 2 4 5 7 8 10 11 The circled hand is the minute hand.

Hours on a Clock The big numbers on a clock stand for the hour that it is. So if the hour hand (the short one) is pointing to the 12, it is 12 o’ clock. 12 3 6 9 1 2 4 5 7 8 10 11 The hour hand is pointing to the 4. What hour is it then? 4 o’ clock!

Minutes on a Clock Minutes on an analog clock are harder. Some clocks have little tick marks in between the numbers to show the minutes. We have written in the minutes in red on the next clock so you can see where they are.

So, the time shown on this clock is four fifteen. The hour hand is pointing towards the four… And the minute hand is pointing to the fifteen!

The Digital Clock A digital clock is a newer type of clock. It just shows the numbers for the time, instead of having hands to point to them. It is a little easier to understand. 10:04 An example of a digital clock.

Time-Telling with the Digital Clock
Telling time with a digital clock is easy. The numbers are already there for you—all you have to do is read them. So the time on this clock says “eleven twenty-three” 11:23 This is the hour This is the minute This separates them

The “0” If the minute shown on the clock is a 1-digit number, a “0” is put in front of it. You read the zero as the letter “o.” So the time on this clock says “ten oh-four” 10:04
