3 Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) –Pain or numbness in hand, wrist, or arm –Hand weakness; inability to grip –Causes Repetitive use of hand or wrist for prolonged periods Rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, or thyroid disorder Narrow carpal tunnel Common Injuries

4 Eyestrain –Sore, tired, burning eyes –Blurred or double vision –Sensitivity to light Common Injuries

5 Shoulder tension –Pain caused from improper positioning –Can be aching or sharp pain –Pain can radiate to neck and arms. Common Injuries

6 Headaches –Pain in the head or neck area –Can be caused by stress, positioning, trauma –Chronic pain can be caused by improper head and neck alignment. Common Injuries

7 Recognize signs that could result in serious injuries. –Numbness or burning sensation in hands –Swelling, stiffness, or reduced grip strength in hands –Pain in wrists, forearms, elbows, neck, or back Common Injuries

8 Key Concepts Neutral posture (GOOD) –Halfway zone –Person’s ability to flex and extend –Comfortable working posture –Reduces risk of musculoskeletal disorders

9 Key Concepts Static positions (BAD) –A working position with no motion –Muscles become fatigued. –Blood flow is reduced.

11 Workstation guidelines –Top of monitor at or below eye level –Align head and neck. –Relax shoulders. –Align wrists and hands with forearms. Computer Work Area

12 Choose a chair with maximum adjustments. –Height –Seat depth –Seat angle –Lumbar support –Arm rests –Tilt Computer Work Area

13 Sit properly –Head balanced naturally over shoulders –Shoulders relaxed, not hunched –Forearms and thighs parallel to the floor (Not like this) Computer Work Area

14 –Alter position of monitor to avoid glare. –Rest eyes periodically. –Include eye exercises in regular routine. Improper lighting can cause eye strain, headaches, and general fatigue. Computer Work Area
