1
Properties of Matter Creating a diagram that shows Melting and Boiling Points Complete each step in your Science notebook
2
Draw a line
3
Label it Solid, Liquid, and Gas Solid Liquid Gas
4
Insert lines at 0 degrees and 100 degrees Solid Liquid Gas 0 degrees 100 degrees
5
If you go to the right on the line you are adding energy to the molecules. If we add energy to Solid and get it hotter than 0 degrees we make it a Liquid. This is called melting Solid Liquid Gas 0 degrees 100 degrees Melting
6
If we go to the left on the line we are removing energy from the molecules. If we have liquid and remove energy to the point it is below 0 degrees we cross the freezing point and the water becomes ice Solid Liquid Gas 0 degrees 100 degrees Melting Freezing
7
So, 0 degrees Celsius is both the freezing and melting point of water. It just depends on if you are adding or removing energy as you cross the 0 degree temperature point. Solid Liquid Gas 0 degrees 100 degrees Melting Freezing
8
If we are adding energy as we cross 100 degrees we go from liquid to gas. This is the boiling point. Solid Liquid Gas 0 degrees 100 degrees Melting Freezing Boiling
9
If we are removing energy as we cross 100 degrees we go from gas to liquid. This is the condensation point. Solid Liquid Gas 0 degrees 100 degrees Melting Freezing Boiling Condensation
10
In Solids the molecules are packed together tightly and move very slow Solid Liquid Gas 0 degrees 100 degrees Melting Freezing Boiling Condensation
11
In Liquids the molecules are farther apart and sliding over each other. They have more movement than solids. Solid Liquid Gas 0 degrees 100 degrees Melting Freezing Boiling Condensation
12
In a Gas the molecules are spaced far apart and moving about quickly Solid Liquid Gas 0 degrees 100 degrees Melting Freezing Boiling Condensation
13
Interesting Facts Boiling and melting points are a physical property of matter Every substance in existence has a boiling and melting point Even diamonds have a melting and boiling point. When a diamond boils it turns into pure carbon dioxide gas
14
Your Task Create a poster sized drawing of the changing states of matter. If you email me a picture of your poster hanging on your bedroom wall or bathroom mirror I will give you 5 extra points on your next test. If you can’t send a picture you can bring in a note signed by your parent/guardian saying it is up there
