BROWSERS & BROWSING What, Which & Why

WHAT IS A BROWSER? Once you have an Internet connection, some programs access the internet automatically to operate A Browser is a program that accesses the Internet and then, as its name suggests, lets you “browse the web” – either directly to a known web site or to search for information using one of many “Search Engines”

BROWSER F.A.Q.’S Which Browser should I use? Can I use more than one Browser? What is a “default” Browser? How do I change my default Browser?

WHICH BROWSER?

A MISSED ADVANTAGE?  It is suggested that Internet Explorer has one advantage that is not been taken into account in this review as it is predates the newest versions.  With the current rapid development of Windows, the integration of Microsoft products can prevent problems  This may be especially true for Tablets

SO WHICH BROWSER? Although the review scores are interesting, the differences are not that critical for the average club member. The security comment with respect to Internet Explorer is valid BUT having BOTH good anti- virus and anti-malware are essential to internet use. If both are used, real-time and up to date, this should be not a major problem

SO WHICH BROWSER? You have Windows so you already have Internet Explorer. It has the best “HELP” and the best feature set If you want to change, both Chrome & Firefox are free downloads For 99 out of 100 users, this will be a matter of personal preference

THE FULL REVIEW The full review can be read at: www.internet-browser-review.toptenreviews.com/

MORE THAN ONE BROWSER? FOR SURE:

MORE THAN ONE BROWSER? Should I have more than one? – May encounter web sites that don’t function correctly with a given browser [Examples experienced: BBC Canada Shop, Innisfil Public Library] – Unlikely you can fix; usually a hardware/software interaction problem – A different browser MAY fix the problem

THE DEFAULT BROWSER The “Default Browser” is the one that will be used automatically when you click on a web address contained in some other program – for example, in an e-mail This will happen even if you already have another Browser open as your preference If you only have one Browser, this is, of course, the default

THE DEFAULT BROWSER [2] When you install Chrome, it does NOT ask if you want it to be the Default. If you want this, you have to set it up Firefox WILL ask during the install. If you say NO at this time, it will ask again each time it is started but you can tell it not to ask You can change the default at any time – as we see in the next slides
