 Stories told on film have the same characteristics as stories told on paper  We can still analyze a film for its characters, plot, tone, mood, conflict, resolution, etc.  The story of a movie is told through images and dialogue

 Set  Casting  Costume  Shot  Lens  Lighting  Sound

 The set of a movie includes the physical place in which the scene is shot  Includes props  May be a real place or on a sound stage (artificially constructed)

 Casting is the process of picking actors to play a role  Screenwriters often put indicators about casting into their scripts  Ex. Middle-aged male Thin brunette in her mid-twenties

 What an actor wears  Includes make-up, hair styling  Costume is a “short-cut,” a signifier that tells the audience a lot about a character

 Wide/long shot: Includes at least all of a person and her surroundings

 Medium shot: Includes less than a full figure

 Close-up: Tightly frames a person (usually just the face) or object; there are degrees within the close up shot as well

 Wide lens (18 mm): Foreground is in focus, background is fuzzy; a “zoom in” perspective that can exaggerate depth  Medium lens(50 mm): Foreground and background are equally clear; like a “human eye”  Long lens (85 mm): Foreground is fuzzy; distant objects are clear

 The amount of light in a shot, usually used to set the mood  Sometimes mentioned in screenplay.  Ex. Ext. full light Int. low light

 The background music or lack thereof can also be used to shape a scene  Ambient sound is what could be “realistically” heard in that scene;  Ex. A man sits in an apartment above a busy street; we can hear traffic and children playing even though we don’t see them

 Your group will be responsible for analyzing one of the film elements from this scene from Psycho:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7mbD PykHoc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7mbD PykHoc  For your element: Include specific examples of the element, what information they convey, and what EFFECT they have
