At the end of this lesson you will be able to: Understand and be able to define a whole number. Understand how numerals fit appropriately on a number line. Identify a question or situation that can use a mathematical approach. Understand the position of a whole number in a number line. Understand, interpret, and work with concrete objects and symbolic representations (e.g. pictures, numbers, graphs, computer representations) Make connections to whole numbers and occupations that require number sense. Understand that in most situations, numbers round to the whole number. L 5: Whole Numbers Part 2

Roman Numerals M = 1000 D = 500 C = 100 L = 50 X = 10 V = 5 I = 1
3
Rules for Writing Roman Numerals 1. You cannot have the same letter more than three times in a row. 2. You write the Roman Numerals in descending order unless you need to subtract (see 2) (big to small) 3. If you have a letter that represents a smaller number in front of a letter that represents a larger number, you subtract the smaller number from the larger number 4. VI ( 5 + 1) = 6, but IV (5 – 1)= 4 5. XI (10 + 1) = 11, but IX (10 – 1) = 9
4
Write these numbers in roman numeral form 2 4 11 126 II IV XI CXXVI

Is there a Secret Code on the dollar bill? Take out a dollar bill and see if you can find some Roman Numerals. Can you figure out what the number is? What does this number represent?

MDCCLXXVI 1000 + (500 + 100 + 100) + (50 + 10 + 10) + (5 + 1) 1000 + 700 + 70 + 6 1776 What happened in 1776? July 4, 1776, the U.S. declared independence from England. Do p. 59 in your packet.

Rules for Reading Large Numbers 1. Beginning at the right, work to the left and separate the numerals into three-digit groups with a comma. 2. Beginning at the left, read each group of number to the comma as a whole number and then say the group name (thousand, million, billion, etc). The comma represents the group name. 3. There is no comma at the end of the number (ones group) so you don’t say a group name.
8
Let’s take a look at a number and write down the words that we would say if we would read it out loud. 279162359464 You would read this number as two hundred seventy-nine billion, one hundred sixty-two million, three hundred fifty- nine thousand, four hundred sixty four.
