2 Definition Adapted Physical Education is an individualized program including physical and motor fitness, fundamental motor skills and patterns, skills in aquatics and dance, and individual and group games and sports designed to meet the unique needs of individuals. Adapt = to adjust

3 Child with disabilities A child with mental retardation, hearing impairment including deafness, speech or language impairment, visual impairment including blindness, serious emotional disturbance, orthopedic impairment, autism, traumatic brain injury, learning disability, deafblindness, or multiple disabilities or other health impairments that require special education and related services.

4 Developmental delays 1. experiencing developmental delays in cognitive development, physical development, communication development, social or emotional development or adaptive development. 2. a diagnosed physical or mental condition that has a high probability of resulting in developmental delay.

5 Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Plan for a student with disabilities Must include physical education Required by IDEA Individuals with Disabilities Act Can be as much as 30 or 40 pages Specific to the individual student.

9 History 1838 – Perkins school for students with visual disabilities (Boston). Prior to 1900, physical education was medically oriented and preventative, developmental, or corrective in nature 1930’s – began to be more sport oriented – focus on whole person
