2. ORGANISING YOUR QUESTIONS Look at your list of questions from yesterday. Rewrite the questions in the order that you will ask them. Organise them under the headings we came up with yesterday: Childhood/early life Teenage years Young adult (first job etc) Adulthood (being a mum or dad) Middle age (around 50 years old) Retirement/recent years Have you thought of any follow-up questions?

3. INTERVIEW TIPS Set up a time in advance with the person – allow at least half an hour. Ask them if they would like to see your list of questions in advance so they can think about their answers, but do not just give them a sheet and tell them to write on it! This should be a personal interview. In case the interview feels like it is dragging on too long, decide in advance which questions might not be essential. Don’t try to write down word for word what the interviewee is saying – this will be impossible and will slow the interview down too much. Take notes. Write up detailed notes immediately afterwards while things are fresh in your mind.

5. PRACTICE INTERVIEWS Pair up with someone else. One of you should ask the other a few of your interview questions. Practice being a good listener. As the person replies, try to think of any good follow-up questions you might ask them. Swap roles and repeat the activity.
