Bone: Hard body tissue made of both living cells and nonliving material. Forms the skeleton. Marrow: Where blood cells are produced. Spongy Bone: Beneath the layer of compact bone. Contains many hollow spaces to help prevent breaking because they act as shock absorbers. Periosteum: Lining of the bone. Compact Bone: A very hard layer of bone that gives it strength.
