SOCIETAL INFLUENCES OF THE CRICKET WORLD CUP 2015

 SELF: ‘In my opinion I don’t follow or watch any of the cricket as it doesn’t interest me in any way’ –JC  ‘Its really awesome, I love cricket. It means I can watch world class players on a world class stage and its not very often that you can watch something like this and also back your own team. Having the resources that I can watch this on and in my own time if I miss a game to makes this a lot easier to follow the team I support (Black caps, New Zealand).’ –Tim

SOCIETAL INFLUENCES OF THE CRICKET WORLD CUP 2015  OTHERS: ‘Going through my time line on Facebook 80% of what I see is about the cricket world cup, yes I think it is good that it is getting advertised but for me it is to much. If I wanted to watch the cricket then I would, if other people wanted to watch it then they can. Not the whole world needs to know about it in such a dramatic way. It’s a little bit over the top, yes some advertising is good, I can agree with that but it’s a bit to much for me’-Jamie  ‘Cricket is something that I pay attention to on occasion, its good being able to hear it on the radio considering that I drive most of the day with my work so hearing updates on how its going makes it a lot easier to follow the cricket and who’s winning and also saves time too’-Mike

SOCIETAL INFLUENCES OF THE CRICKET WORLD CUP 2015  SOCIETY: ‘The way that the ICC cricket world cup has been advertised shows some businesses other ways that they can get them/their product out to the world. I think that the cricket world cup has a good societal influence because its joining nations by supporting teams that aren’t big, or teams that are winning etc. having it been advertised nearly everywhere you go means that you know its on and you know what time the team you are supporting is going to play. This is a well organised event.’-Vertical Horizons Manager

FORMS OF MEDIA BEING USED TO GET US INVOLVED THE CWC? WHY ARE THEY USING THEM? HOW ARE THEY USING THEM?  TV (paid and free, limited things, eg. Replays highlights etc.), Radio, Newspaper, Internet.  The media is trying to get peoples attention by covering every form of media from TV to radio to internet etc. because they are trying to get more people interested in it so that they can by merchandise and tickets and by other things from the people that sponsor the cricketers.  On the internet 80.8% of the social media distribution is on Facebook, 19.1% is on Google+. The other 0.1% is shared between twitter and other social media websites.  The also have news websites eg. 1 news and 3 news, showing replays highlights etc. They also play things on the news at night etc.

VIEWING NUMBERS PER GAME  257 million fans tuned in to watch India beat South Africa for the first time in the 50-over showpiece event.  It was estimated that over a billion people tuned into the Cricket World Cup game between India and Pakistan.  In 2011, 135 million people watched the world cup final.  We couldn’t get official numbers for each game, there were millions of people who tuned in to watch the games.

HOW DOES THE SUCCESS MAKE US FEEL ABOUT NZ? WHY? WOULD IT BE DIFFERENT IN OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES? WHY?  When New Zealand won the semi final on the 24/3/2015 it made the whole nation stand up and cheer. New Zealanders from near and far were so proud of how the black caps took it out over South Africa in the last few moments. The whole nation was proud. The black caps successes make New Zealanders fell happy and incredibly proud to call this their country, knowing that they’re in the lead keeps them cheerful whether its during work or at home etc. because we are a very competitive country. If we aren’t doing well in any big sport, the nation doesn’t seem to be very happy about it. Because we have gotten into the ICC cricket world cup final, it made us feel proud and good. If we lose the final then the whole nation and New Zealanders won’t be to happy and they’ll feel pretty guttered. All the hard work and dedication gone. Also because they are playing on home turf, winning would mean that they would join India in winning on home turf as they did in the world cup in 2011.

HOW HAVE THE ICC PROMOTED GAMES IN THE COUNTRY/REGION? HOW DOES THIS APPEAL TO US?  They are partners with numbers of businesses including, ESPN STAR Sports, Reliance Communications Limited, LG Electronics, PepsiCo, MRF Tyres LTD, Emirates, Reebok International Limited, Castrol, MoneyGram International, and, Hyundai.  These are things that people use often and they see ads about on TV, in news papers, on the internet and hear about on the raido. So having these partners means that the word gets around quickly.  ICC have promoted games in the country wherever and whenever they can.

WHAT EFFECT HAS SOCIAL MEDIA HAD ON THE CRICKET WORLD CUP?  There have been more apps released because of the cricket world cup, there is an official ICC cricket world cup 2015 app, as well as ESPN and results apps etc.  Many websites e.g. Sky Go, TVNZ ondemand etc. have replays, highlights and much more about the games on their websites.  Facebook is one of the main places that gets the word out about what’s happening in the cricket. From official people saying what they’ve been up to, as well as the news tells people when something significant happens and also friends talking to friends about what’s happening
