FRACTIONS 4 TH GRADE MATHEMATICS CREATED BY: ALYSSA GASWINT
3
WHAT IS A FRACTION? PARTS of a WHOLE. There is a NUMERATOR and DENOMINATOR that makes up a fraction.
4
NUMERATORS Top number of a fraction It is how many (parts) you have.
5
DENOMINATOR Bottom number of a fraction How many PARTS the WHOLE is divided into. REMEMBER: parts are how many pieces you have. Whole is how many parts make ONE whole.
6
HOW TO WRITE FRACTIONS WHOLE The WHOLE has SIX equal PARTS. What if you have two parts of this hexagon? The fraction would be written as: Parts2 Whole6 This fraction can be SIMPLIFIED. What does simplified mean?
7
If there are twenty-one students in your math class and fifteen people are present. How would you write this as a fraction? What is your numerator? (Remember this is how parts you have) There are 15 students here, so this is your numerator. What is your denominator? (How many parts are in the WHOLE) There are 21 students total. Your fraction should look like this: 15 21
8
SIMPLIFYING FRACTIONS Also known as REDUCING Simplifying fractions means to have a fraction in the simplest form as possible. There are two ways to do this. Divide top and bottom until you cannot divide by anything else Find the Greatest Common Factor.
9
SIMPLIFY 6 8
10
What can you divide 6 and 8 by to simplify? You would by 2 on top and bottom 6 3 8 = 4
11
GREATEST COMMON FACTOR The LARGEST number that can go into BOTH top (numerator) and bottom (denominator) of a fraction. 4 8 What is the largest number that can go into both? You would divide by 2!! 4 2 = 1 8 2 = 2
12
QUIZ TIME!!! Question #1: True or False?? A fraction consists of a numerator and denominator? TRUE FALSE
13
CORRECT!!! There is a numerator and denominator in a fraction! Proceed to next slide
14
INCORRECT Remember: the top is called the numerator and the bottom is the denominator. RETURN TO PREVIOUS SLIDE
15
QUESTION #2 When simplifying a fraction, would you: A. Multiply the top and bottomMultiply the top and bottom B. Divide the top and bottomDivide the top and bottom
16
INCORRECT You would not use MULTIPLICATION, because you are trying to simplify, so you would want to DIVIDE to make the fraction smaller. If you multiply, this increases the fraction. TRY AGAIN
17
CORRECT!!!!! When simplifying a fraction, you DIVIDE the fraction by a number on the top and bottom to simplify the fraction. NEXT QUESTION

19
CORRECT You both would have equal pieces of the pizza. NEXT QUESTION
20
INCORRECT Although your friend only has three pieces, the three pieces total the same size as your pieces. TRY AGAIN! TRY AGAIN
21
QUESTION #4 SIMPLIFY THIS FRACTION: 4 8 A. 1 2 B. 1 1 4 C. 22 3
22
CORRECT You have successfully simplified this fraction! NEXT Slide
23
INCORRECT Try again!
24
QUESTION#5: TRUE OR FALSE? THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PARTS IS CALLED THE DENOMINATOR. A. True B. False
25
CORRECT Yes, the bottom (denominator) is the total number of parts to make the whole.
26
INCORRECT The bottom (denominator) is the total number of parts of the whole. TRY AGAIN
