Prime Factorization
2
What are factors? Factors are whole numbers multiplied together to make a product. (A number is divisible by its factors.) 2 x 3 = 6 product factors
3
Example 1: List all the factors of each number.
18 1 x 18 Start by listing all 2 x 9 the pairs of factors 3 x 6 The factors of 18 are: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 18
4
Example 1: List all the factors of each number.
13 1 x 13 Start by listing all the pairs of factors The factors of 13 are: 1 and 13, which makes 13 a prime number
5
What is prime factorization?
The prime factorization of a number is the number written as the product of its prime factors.
6
Example 2: Write the prime factorization of each number.
Use a factor tree: 36 *Start with any two factors you think of * then keep using factors until you get only primes The prime factorization of 36 is: 22.32
7
Example 2: Write the prime factorization of each number.
(B) Use a ladder diagram: 2 I 54 * Start with the 3 I 27 smallest 3 I 9 prime and 3 divide The prime factorization of 54 is: =
