 Test the rates of rust (oxidation) of two metals, iron and copper, which have diverse properties and functions  Relevant as a daily occurrence on Earth while still having factors important to space and space travel as well  Interest is in an environment that supports human life (requires oxygen and water)

 Galactic Mining  Exploiting raw materials from asteroids and other minor planets  Material can be taken back to Earth or used for space construction  Materials that could be mined or extracted include iron, nickel, titanium for construction

 A chemical reaction in which oxygen is added to an element or compound  The process of losing electrons from a chemical element or compound  The interaction between oxygen molecules and other substances

 The use of copper goes back at least 10,000 years, making it our oldest metal.  It conducts heat and electricity better than any other metal except for silver and is a part of many metal alloys.  Some rocket engines rely on copper and copper alloys because of their reusability

 Because of the incorrect activation, the initial data gathered was inconclusive. Only the iron ampoule was broken and oxidized.  A second ground truth experiment was conducted to simulate what happened on the ISS.  A re-flight is scheduled with Mission 3.

 Results will be qualitative. Visual evidence of oxidation such as the red in iron and the green of copper will be photographed using a microscope.  Thanks to Laboratory Optical Service, we were able to borrow a microscope to help examine our experiment.
