2
Test the rates of rust (oxidation) of two metals, iron and copper, which have diverse properties and functions Relevant as a daily occurrence on Earth while still having factors important to space and space travel as well Interest is in an environment that supports human life (requires oxygen and water)
3
Galactic Mining Exploiting raw materials from asteroids and other minor planets Material can be taken back to Earth or used for space construction Materials that could be mined or extracted include iron, nickel, titanium for construction
4
A chemical reaction in which oxygen is added to an element or compound The process of losing electrons from a chemical element or compound The interaction between oxygen molecules and other substances
5
The use of copper goes back at least 10,000 years, making it our oldest metal. It conducts heat and electricity better than any other metal except for silver and is a part of many metal alloys. Some rocket engines rely on copper and copper alloys because of their reusability
6
Because of the incorrect activation, the initial data gathered was inconclusive. Only the iron ampoule was broken and oxidized. A second ground truth experiment was conducted to simulate what happened on the ISS. A re-flight is scheduled with Mission 3.
7
Results will be qualitative. Visual evidence of oxidation such as the red in iron and the green of copper will be photographed using a microscope. Thanks to Laboratory Optical Service, we were able to borrow a microscope to help examine our experiment.
