3  Overview  Overview:  The first game of golf was played at Bruntsfield links, in Edinburgh, Scotland in A.D. 1456.  Golf is played with in the area of land that is designated by a golf course. The course is between 5000 to 7000 yards in the length.  Each hole has a guideline for how many times it should take a golfer to hit the ball (known as stroke) to get it in the hole.  Golfer who has the least number of strokes or is the closest to or under par overall wins. 4 Course Design:  Front9  Front 9: Holes 1 through 9 on a golf course  Back9  Back 9: Holes 10 through 18 on a golf course.  Fairway  Fairway: The short grass on the hole between the tee and the green.  Green  Green: The area of specially prepared grass around the hole, where putts are played.  Rough  Rough: Grass that borders the fairway, which is normally longer than the fairway.  Hazard  Hazard: Physical part of the course such as water or sand, where it is very difficult to play the ball.
