ANCIENT TIMES This is Fillip the 2 nd and Alexander the Great on his horse, Voukefalas. They were the greatest kings of Macedonia. After Alexander’s death, Kassander was the General of Macedonia. He united 26 small towns into a big city. He named this city after his wife, Thessaloniki. She was Alexander’s the Great sister.

ROMAN AND BYZANTINE TIMES This is the Roman Agora(market) and a Byzantine church. In 168 B.C. Thessaloniki became part of the Roman Empire. After the fall of Rome, Thessaloniki became the second largest city of Byzantine Empire, after Konstantinople.

THE OTTOMAN TIMES In 1432, Thessaloniki is part of the Turkish Empire for almost 5 centuries!

LIBERATION In 1912 our city is free at last! But in 1917 the center of the city was destroyed by a big fire.72.000 people were homeless. The city was rebuilt later according to the European stule.

MODERN TIMES After the end of the 2 nd World War Thessaloniki became a modern city. It participates in political financial and cultural activities. It’s a modern metropolis of the Balkan Peninsula.
