1 Floods in Netherlands in 50’s The North Sea flood of 1953 (Dutch: Watersnoodramp: 'the flood disaster'). On the night of 31 January – 1 February 1953 there was a big storm which came from northwest and a large areas of country were totally flooded. People weren’t warned about the storm so a lot of them died.

2 Casualties People were very scared and there was a huge chaos. There were 1 835 casualties and more than 70 000 people were evacuated. Flood covered 9 % of the farmland and sea water inundated 1 365 km². 30 000 animals died. 47 300 buildings were damaged because of the water. Many people still commemorate memories of people which died on 1 st February.

3 Damages 47 300 buildings were damaged because of the water. The biggest floodings were on the islands of Schouwen-Duiveland, Tholen, Sint Philipsland, Goeree-Overflakkee, the Hoeksche Waard, Voorne-Putten and Alblasserwaard. 4 Consequences The damage costs 450 million Euro. Because of these disasters the goverment was made to do safety measures. They were discussing about it for a long time and they have made project Delta Works which is very useful.
