6 Why Should I Plan? Examiners have commented that whilst many students think carefully about their spelling, grammar and punctuation, many students do not give enough thought to the development and structure of their ideas. It is essential to write a short plan. What will go in each section? What is the best order for this? How will you fully develop each idea?

7 How Should I plan? Identify the form, audience and purpose Make brief notes under these headings Make brief notes under the heading “subject” Decide on an order for your “subject” ideas

8 Write a letter to your local newspaper in which you argue that the positive things teenagers do deserve reporting too. Subject Form- direct at reader, formal language, link to audience, opinions and examples Audience – professional, formal language, sound knowledgeable, relevant details only Purpose – give both sides – realise bad news sells, people do care about crime, BUT balance – give E.g.s of positives and back up with evidence Views of teenagers Negative views in the newspaper – reinforce the stereotype Hoodies/thugs/ drinking/violence/anti- social behaviour – should be reported Only small minority of teens involved in these things Positive views that should be in the newspaper – Sports’ achievements Records / team successes Music School bands / singing contests Teenagers volunteering for local community projects

9 You have 5 minutes to plan this question…. Write an article for an information guide recommending a place of interest in the UK that might be enjoyable to visit.

10 Improve this paragraph. Focus on vocabulary and spelling. If your looking for a good day out with your family, then I recomend St Albans. This is a very nice city in Hertfordshire which has a big cathedral and very nice parks. If your looking for somewhere to do a bit of shopping then St Albans is also a good place to go as there are lots of shops and a populer market on most days of the week.

11 Improve this paragraph. Focus on sentence construction and punctuation. Let’s start with the cathedral it is a magnificent sight to behold settled a short distance from the picturesque Verulamium park. It has an impressive façade that could compete with any other cathedral in the country its history is absolutely fascinating. It has a free tour guide and you can visit at any time as long as there are no services in progress although you may wish to go to a service.

14 Exam Practice Plan and Write ONE of the following exam question… EITHER 1.There have been a number of serious traffic accidents involving children on a busy road in your area. Write a letter to your local Council, suggesting ways in which such accidents could be avoided. OR 2.Write an article for a teenage magazine in which you explain what changes teenagers could make to their lives and why.
