Grades Hart High School’s Graduation Requirements 220 Credits Total Including: ENGLISH 40 CREDITS (8 Classes) SOCIAL STUDIES 30 CREDITS (6 Classes) Grade 10 – Modern Civilizations Grade 11 – U.S. History Grade 12 – American Government & Economics SCIENCE (Physical 2/Life 2) 20 CREDITS (4 Classes) MATHEMATICS 20 CREDITS (4 Classes) ………………………………All students must pass Algebra 1 Sequence HEALTH 2.5 CREDITS (1 Class) FINE ARTS 10 CREDITS (2 Classes) (or one year Foreign Language plus one semester Fine Art) PRACTICAL ART 5 CREDITS (1 Class) P.E. 20 CREDITS (4 Classes) a. Grade Two (2) semesters of P.E. b. Grade 10 – 12 Two (2) semesters of P.E. ADDITIONAL CLASSES 72.5 CREDITS Duplicate courses in classes excluding P.E. may not be given double credit CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL EXIT EXAM TEST REQUIREMENTS: Students must pass both Language Arts and Math (with a score of 350 or higher) Exit Exams in order to receive a diploma.

Grades and Attendance Poor attendance = Poor grades Hart HS: Fall 2012 Of the students who had at least 3 Ds and Fs, almost 70% of them had excessive absences or tardies Only 14% of students who had one D or F were classified as having attendance problems

Grades and Attendance Poor attendance consequences Saturday School: 5 truancies/10 tardies Revoked dance privileges: 20 tardies/15 truancies Revoked parking pass: 25 tardies/20 truancies Revoked off campus pass: 11 tardies/10 truancies (a quarter) A truancy is an unexcused absence to one period, i.e. if a student is unexcused for a full day and they have six periods, they will have six truancies in that one day.

Grades and Organization Another leading cause of Ds and Fs: Organization problems Using a planner: Every student issued planner at year start Writing down homework is essential Sit down with your student and insure they are writing in their planner daily and up to date with assignments Emphasize the importance of staying organized in both school and life

Involvement Importance of Student Involvement: All studies show students greatly benefit from being involved in extracurricular activities Benefits are found with time management skills, better social skills, expanding social circle, increased leadership skills and greater chances of success in high school and beyond

Communication Communication not just with your school, but with your student Sit and talk with your student “I don’t have any” Stress the importance of school, attending, and completing work. Lead by example. As noted in the pyramid, the student should be your first contact regarding grades, or any concerns. If there is an issue, encourage them to go to their teacher to talk about it.

Communication After student has initiated conversation First school contact should be the teacher Failing grades Checking in on assignments, tests Concerns about instruction, class Contact the teacher by phone or Teacher contact info available on website and by calling school After contacting the teacher, the counselors and administrators may get involved to further support the student to succeed. If you have attendance questions, contact attendance.

Communication Weekly progress reports The last day of the week in the Counselor’s Office Grades, Missing Assignments, Test Scores, Attendance Signed by every teacher Usually helps to have an attached positive consequence or discipline associated with filling out the progress report since it is STUDENT’S responsibility to remember to pick one up!
