2 What is Potassium? Potassium is a mineral found in most foods. Potassium helps keep your heart, nerves and muscles working well. It is the job of the healthy kidney to control the amount of potassium in the body.

3 Potassium Intake and Hemodialysis With kidney disease, potassium can build up in your blood – which is dangerous to your heart. It is important to read your food labels and keep your potassium intake low. – Low potassium foods have less than 150 mg per serving. – High potassium foods have greater than 250 mg per serving.
