1 Educational System of Greece Education constitutes a basic mission for the State and shall aim at the moral, intellectual, professional and physical training of Greeks, the development of national and religious consciousness and at their formation as free and responsible citizens…. All Greeks are entitled to free education on all levels at State educational institutions…. The State shall provide financial assistance to those who distinguish hemselves, as well as to students in need of assistance or special protection, in accordance with their abilities. (Article 16 of the Constitution

2 Compulsory Education The duration of studies in Primary Education (Elementary School) is six years, with entry age the 6th year. Attendance is mandatory. Public education and schoolbooks are provided free. Middle School has a duration of three years.

5 Non-compulsory Secondary Education Secondary Education, which includes the Lyceum, General and Vocational, as well as the SEK. Higher Education, which includes Universities (AEI), Polytechnics, Technological Education Institutions (TEI). Attendance in the second cycle of the Secondary Education is voluntary and its duration is three (3) years of the day Unified and Vocational Lyceums, and four (4) for the evening ones.

12 ΤΕΙ Apprenticeship Class 4th year JOB MARKET After completing the National Exams Specialization Degree by the EOPPEP License of Profession Practice with preconditions VOCATIONAL LYCEUM Secondary Cycle

13 Vocational Training School (SEK) The purpose of the School of Vocational Training is to provide initial vocational training, for duration of three years, to graduates of the compulsory formal education. Students over twenty (20) years of age are enrolled in the Night SEK schools The 1st, 2nd and the Apprenticeship Classes operate in the SEK schools.

14 ΙΕΚ These are Vocational Training Institutes (IEK), belonging to the category of Secondary Education. 1st Year, 2nd Year (disciplines) and Six-month apprenticeship. Level 4 specialization degree.

15 Higher Education The typical Higher Education in Greece, which is public and free, consists of two sectors: a) The University sector, which includes universities and polytechnics. b) The Technological sector, which includes the Technological Educational Institutes (TEI). Admission of students to the above institutes depends on their performance in the national examinations take place at the end of the 3rd Class of the Unified or Vocational Lyceum.
