1. Applying Color and Value

2. Objectives To apply what we know about color schemes. To create an artwork using a complementary color scheme. To examine and describe the visual outcome and message of the color scheme.

3. Project Requirements 1- Choose a black and white image from which to work. 2- Identify and outline the large value shifts you see in the black and white image. 3- Transfer image to the project paper using the pressure transfer method. 4- Choose a complementary color scheme to use in the artwork. 5- Get paint and mix the required hues if necessary. 6- Paint the artwork. 7- Analyze and describe in writing the outcome of the chosen color scheme and it’s message.

9. Keep your copy of your image next to your project paper so you can use it to paint the value shifts you see.

10. Step 5: Paint light sections with light values; dark sections with dark values.

11. Step 4: Start painting with only one of the complementary colors. –Use the darkest value color to paint the darkest value sections. Mix tints as necessary to fill in all the varying dark-value areas with this color.

12. Step 5: Continue painting with the other complementary color. –Use the lightest value color to paint the light value sections. Mix tints as necessary to fill in all the varying lighter-value areas with this color.

13. Step 6: Write the following on a 3”x5” index card: –Your first name and last INITIAL on top line. –Write the names of the two complementary colors you used. –Describe the outcome of your artwork by answering these questions: What expressive language would you use to describe the artwork (happy, sad, funny, joyful, aggressive, etc.)? How does the complementary color scheme change the mood of the original black and white image? What message does this artwork give to the viewer?
