PRESENTED BY STEVE GARWOOD LECTURER SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION, INFORMATION AND LIBRARY STUDIES RUTGERS UNIVERSITYLIBRARYSTEVE@YAHOO.COM Screencasting: Video based lectures and demonstrations (Camtasia, Jing & comparison with other tools)

About Me & Screencasting Former Reference and Instruction Librarian Lecturer, SCILS, RU  On-Campus and Online  Graduate and Undergraduate Teaching:  Information Technology for Libraries and Information Agencies  Multimedia Production  Web Design  Social Software Student Contact  @500 emails and countless Instant Messages each semester

Student Comments (Advice to future students) The camtasia programs that Steve put together were invaluable!!! Review them, take notes, review them again. That picture was worth a thousand words - and the added words made it all the more clearer.

Student Comments Watch the Camtasia lectures first thing. Then use them again, as you need to. Within a few minutes of seeing & hearing Steve go through steps you get an idea of the whole unit/week is about.

Student Comments Camtasia. I have learned most technology stuff I know from a book and was initially reluctant to sit there tapping my fingers on the desk while the demonstrations played, but they were incredibly useful and clear. Plus, as a distance learning student, stuck at my desk so much of the time, there was something kind of nice about hearing a voice.

Student Comments Listen to the Camtasia lectures first as they are very helpful. I could hear Steve teaching, and something about his voice makes it evident that he is enjoying this class and that he really wants you to enjoy it as well.

Student Comments I found the video lectures one of the most helpful parts of this class. Reading alone does not always make technology concepts clear, but seeing someone else going using the different applications is indispensable. In an online course it can be nice to hear a human being on the other side of the computer.

What I primarily Use Jing by TechSmith  Image captures  Short (<5min) Video captures  Easy to share via email/IM Camtasia by TechSmith  Lectures  Screen Demos/Presentations Adobe Captivate  Lectures  Screen Demos  Software Simulations

What I primarily Use (Quick Comparison) Product/ Desc $$FormatsExport /Produce Notes Features JingFree flash onlypng/swf only<5min Great for “disposable” Easy upload Automatic url in clipboard Camtasia$299 $179 (ed) flash mov wmv avi m4v mp3 All associated files produced.html,.js Fluid VideoPan/Zoom Captions Quizzing Cursor Highlight Mouse Sounds Captivate$699 $199 (ed) flash exe “”Slide based Better for Simulations 508 & SCORM compliant PowerPointesque presentation tools, etc. Better Quizzing

Advantages Humanize/Personalize It’s easy to do the basics in each program Reuse and Repurpose content  If you break things into small chunks you can “mash-up” your content to create new content Be timely (the world loves video)  Who doesn’t know the term Viral Video? Vodcast  Podcasting is cool…vodcasting is very cool

Disadvantages You have to learn something new It takes time to record, produce and upload You may have to change your approach  Lectures should generally be “chunked”  Attention spans are short and bandwidth is precious  Break things apart to put them together in other ways Might have to re-do PPT slides so they scale  “6x6” rule

Examples What you’re watching now is a screencast of PPT Stay tuned for:  A Screen/Application Demo  An IM call for help (meebo & Jing)  A Quick example of Camtasia Recording/Publishing  Demo of phrase searching and file-type restriction
