Our students taking advantage of the opportunities at Irvin T-STEM academy Problem based learning Throughout every discipline, our students learn by utilization of problem based teaching methods. Staff is fully trained in the implementation of problem based teaching by certified trainers. Students lean by solving meaningful, real-world problems which increases rigor and relevance of 9- 12 Texas standards. Students build skills valuable for today’s world, such as critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration and communication all of which are thought and assessed. The project includes processes for students to use feed back to consider modification that lead to high-quality products which are presented regularly to public audiences of STEM professionals. PBL methods increase motivation in learning, student’s knowledge retention and achievement on state-administered tests. Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (T-STEM) Academies are rigorous secondary schools focusing on improving instruction and academic performance in science and mathematics- related subjects and increasing the number of students who study and enter STEM careers. T-STEM Academies are demonstration schools and learning labs that develop innovative methods to improve science and mathematics instructions. Irvin T-STEM Academy’s Programs of Study Irvin has pathways of study in the areas of: - Biotechnology - Electrical Engineering -Robotics - Green Energy Engineering -Media Production - Civil Engineering -Architecture - Cyber Security - Accounting - Technology All of our pathways of study include the opportunity of earning up to 36 college credit hours. What are the benefits of Irvin’s college credit approach? 1.Credit is articulated locally in actual degree plans at UTEP and EPCC. 2.Save over $45,000.00 in future college expenses. 3.Receive industry certification in many of our programs of study which can pay good wages while going to school. 4.Be provided with college and career ready curricula to be ready for life. Academy students benefit from presentations from experts in STEM fields. Irvin places high value in the experience that can be gained from internships and other service learning methods. Every academy student will complete a capstone project in their program of study and gain the necessary skill sets from an internship/externship opportunity with one of the leading STEM businesses in town. Many of such businesses are active advisors to our academy. The state of Texas designation. The El Paso Metroplex counts with three public T-STEM academies designated by the state of Texas. Irvin and Transmoutain Early College High Schools are the only designated academies in EPISD. With the state’s changing graduation plans, Irvin will be the only comprehensive high school in the state providing every student with a STEM endorsed high school diploma which goes far beyond the minimum foundation high school graduation plan in place for other schools in the El Paso Metroplex. Why T-STEM? Students carrying out a rocket demonstration. You may have heard or read the statistics and numerous news stories detailing our forthcoming shortage of scientists and engineers. According the Bureau of Labor and statistics, all of the top 10 fastest- growing careers are either directly related to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) or require a basic knowledge of STEM. The average salary for STEM professionals tops out at an average of about $100,000.00, with some of those jobs simply requiring a technical associate’s degree. 9 th grade academy students signing their “commitment to graduate” diploma Service Learning
