2. Why Immigration? Canada needs immigrants for two main reasons: 1.The death rate is expected to surpass the birth rate in Canada. Therefore, in order for Canada to grow, we need more immigrants. 2.By 2016, the number of retirees will outnumber the number of people available to take those positions. We need immigrants to fill those vacant jobs.

Temporary vs. Permanent Residence Temporary PermitsPermanent Permits People who want to be in Canada for a short period of time Study (go to post- secondary schools here), Work (on a short term basis), Visitor Extensions (want to visit Canada longer than 6 months) People who want to move to Canada and have it as their new country Refugees, Economic Immigrants, Family Class, Other

5. The 4 Categories of Immigrants 1.Refugees (13%) –People who are escaping persecution or torture –Believe that their life is in danger if they were to stay in their country –Takes about 4 months to be processed

6. 2. Family Class (28%) –Spouses, partners, children, parents of people living in Canada –Takes about 6 – 7 months to be processed 3. Economic Immigrants (55%) –Skilled workers and businesspeople –Takes about 6 – 7 months to be processed

7. 4. Other (4%) –People accepted as immigrants for humanitarian or compassionate reasons –Takes about 3 – 4 months to be processed

8. “Adding Up the Points” The points system is part of the criteria Canada uses to accept immigrants Started in 1967 Applies only to economic immigrants (skilled workers and professionals) If a person is not a refugee or family-class immigrant, they must qualify under the points system

9. The Health Factor May be denied entry if: –They have a condition that could endanger public safety –E.g. a mental disorder –Their health could put the health of Canadians at risk –E.g. tuberculosis –Their health could put “excessive demand” on Canada’s health services –E.g. HIV/AIDS

10. Health requirements are not applied to people entering Canada as refugees or as family-class immigrants
