2 Cub Scouting 101 Year-round, family-oriented program within Boy Scouts of America (BSA) designed for boys in Grades 1-5 Cub Scouting is intended to promote: – Character Development – Good Citizenship and Community Service – Sportsmanship and Fitness – Family Understanding – Respectful Relationships – Personal Achievement – Fun and Adventure – Preparation for Boy Scouts

3 Pack 828: Organization Based at Twin Creeks Elementary School as part of Mt Diablo-Silverado BSA Council

4 The Den Core (home) unit in the Cub Scout experience Typically 6-8 boys of same grade who meet 1-2 times per month with agenda coordinated by Den Leader – Parental involvement is essential part of the experience Work on projects/units required for advancement to next level (i.e. safety, scouting principles, etc.) Go on field trips to local venues to explore new places, learn about the community and provide public service

6 A Year of Cub Scouting Sample Activities of the 2012-13 Wolves Den Den Activities – Monthly meetings and field trip – Black Diamond Mines – Santa Cruz tidepools – Sticker factory tour – San Francisco Foodbank – San Ramon Police Department – Rocket launches – Building bird feeders Pack Activities – Monthly meetings – Pinewood Derby – Hikes – Camping trips – Food drive – Popcorn fundraising – Summer Day Camp The activities of each Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos den will differ depending on the interests of the scouts, parents, age of the scouts, etc.

7 Financials Pack 828 maintains an annual, public budget to ensure we continue to provide quality programming and experiences to the cub scouts – Fundraising via popcorn sales is a large component of the Pack’s cash flow (September/October focus) Estimated out-of-pocket costs – Annual dues: $88 – Uniform: $45 (shirt, neckerchief, slider) – Handbook: $9 – Other (USS Hornet camping trip, etc.)

8 Summary Cub Scouting in 6 words: Personal development, fun, adventure and achievement Pack 828 is operated by volunteers: Parental involvement is critical at both the den and pack levels – Some open positions exist on the Pack Committee Your son will progress with his Den through the cub scout curriculum and ranks

9 What’s Next? Tiger den “logistics” will be finalized in August or September when we have a better sense of sign-ups – Existing dens for Grades 2-4 welcome new members!
