5. + Using Music in Schools 1 You don’t need a licence to: Perform music live in class or in the course of teaching Play music from a recording or on the soundtrack of a film in class or in the course of teaching Copy a musical work or sound recording by hand (not by photocopier or computer etc) in the course of teaching or being taught or setting or taking an exam, provided you acknowledge the copyright owners and provided the copying is limited and not done for a commercial purpose

6. + Using Music in Schools 2 You do need a licence to do any of these things using any electronic equipment or reprographic device: Copy sheet music or lyrics Make copies of sound recordings Make sound recordings of copyright music Copy copyright music into a film

7. + Using Music in Schools 3 Unless both the audience and the performers consist only of pupils and school staff, you do need a licence to perform music (e.g.): Live performance Playing a sound recording Showing a film Using a broadcast

9. + Public performance of Musicals etc So called Grand Right works: Musicals Operas Ballet Pantomimes and reviews with specially written music Other similar shows incorporating dramatic performance Are licensed for public performance by their publishers
