2 + Basic Copyright 1 Copyright protects the owners of: original literary, dramatic, musical or artistic works, sound recordings, films or broadcasts, and the typographical arrangement of published editions.

3 + Basic Copyright 2 “Restricted Acts – copyright owners entitled to licence: Copying Issuing copies to the public renting or lending to the public performing, showing or playing the work in public to communicating the work to the public to make an adaptation of the work or do any of the above in relation to an adaptation

4 + Basic Copyright Three Duration of Copyright for copyright works – life of the author plus 70yrs for sound recordings – currently 50yrs from publication due to rise to 70yrs this year for films – life of author/director/composer plus 70 yrs for broadcasts - 50 years from first broadcast

5 + Using Music in Schools 1 You don’t need a licence to: Perform music live in class or in the course of teaching Play music from a recording or on the soundtrack of a film in class or in the course of teaching Copy a musical work or sound recording by hand (not by photocopier or computer etc) in the course of teaching or being taught or setting or taking an exam, provided you acknowledge the copyright owners and provided the copying is limited and not done for a commercial purpose

6 + Using Music in Schools 2 You do need a licence to do any of these things using any electronic equipment or reprographic device: Copy sheet music or lyrics Make copies of sound recordings Make sound recordings of copyright music Copy copyright music into a film

7 + Using Music in Schools 3 Unless both the audience and the performers consist only of pupils and school staff, you do need a licence to perform music (e.g.): Live performance Playing a sound recording Showing a film Using a broadcast

8 + Getting licences Get licences for: Public performance of music and sound recordings from PRS for Music and PPL. They sell through www.cefm.co.ukwww.cefm.co.uk Recording and using the recordings of broadcasts from ERA www.era.or.uk www.era.or.uk Copying printed music and lyrics from CLA schools.cla.co.uk or through iaps www.iaps.org.ukwww.iaps.org.uk Copying printed hymns and worship songs for use in assembly etc from CCLi www.ccli.co.ukwww.ccli.co.uk Showing films – check online

9 + Public performance of Musicals etc So called Grand Right works: Musicals Operas Ballet Pantomimes and reviews with specially written music Other similar shows incorporating dramatic performance Are licensed for public performance by their publishers

10 + Are you a composer? If your music gets performed live, or is broadcast or used online join the Performing Right Society www.prsformusic.com

11 + PMLL schools licence Available from CLA or through iaps State schools in England and NI all covered already Other state schools through local authorities Schools can copy printed music Using a photocopier Using a scanner and a printer Making a hand written copy and then a photocopier and scanner Using score writing software

13 + PMLL schools licence Conditions 2 that you do not going to copy more than 10% by number of the items in an album or a multi-movement vocal score that each copy carries a credit: “Copy made on dd/mm/yyyy (date to be added) under PMLL Licence for use at (name of school and post code to be inserted here)” No copying for instrumental or vocal teaching
