Foldable Ocean Life Zones Intertidal Zone Neritic Zone
Turn your foldable sideways and label the sections Ocean Life Zones Benthic Zone Bathyal Zone Abyssal Zone
4
1. Intertidal Zone Between high and low tide lines
Changes a lot between water and dry land = Difficult for animals and plants to survive because they must be able to live outside of water To avoid being washed out to sea, organisms (plants and animals) must attach themselves to the ground
5
2. Neritic Zone Plenty of sunlight Low water pressure
Constant temperature LOTS of organisms live here!
6
3. Pelagic Zone (sunlight zone) Means “open sea” (Greek = “pelagos”
Water is deeper here At the surface, there is lots of light Down below, the water gets colder and the water pressure increases
7
4. Bathyal Zone 4. Bathyal Zone (twilight zone) Below the pelagic zone
At the bottom of this zone, there is no sunlight = There are no plants that grow Harder for animals to live here
8
5. Abyssal Zone 5. Abyssal Zone (midnight zone)
NO sunlight reaches this zone Some animals produce their own light Little food is available Very high water pressure Water temperature is very low/cold
10
Organisms of Each Ocean Life Zone
Intertidal = hermit crab, sea star, mussels, sea urchin Neritic = Loggerhead sea turtle, mackerel, cod, kelp, dolphin Pelagic = Great White shark, Nurse Shark, Killer Whale (Orca) Bathyal = Blue Whale, Humpback Whale Abyssal = Anglerfish, Giant Squid, Viperfish
