Aims for the session Provide an overview of the main changes to the new national curriculum for mathematics Explain how we teach your children mathematics Offer you the opportunity to explore some problem solving activities

Summary of changes to Mathematics curriculum It goes further than the previous curriculum. Practice is key! There is a renewed emphasis on problem solving The programme of study is set out on a year- by-year basis As you’ve probably heard, calculators are banned in the KS2 SAT Levels are gone!

Early Years curriculum M (Mathematics) – embedded across the whole curriculum -N (Numbers) -SSM (Shape Space and Measures) Number Fun - practical activities with a variety of resources which are child- led Focus groups with an adult 1 to 1 working on individual targets

Year 1 - 6 From school to school there will be variations on how lessons are planned and taught New concepts are taught through practical approaches Lessons can start with a mental oral starter or a challenge to investigate There will be an input to the main phase of the learning The main teaching phase - accessing a range of resources to support their learning Pit stop plenaries – assessing understanding and dealing with misconceptions Plenary – evaluate learning and/or move onto the next phase of learning

What is my child learning in Maths? How can I help them? Different approaches in each school including:- Topic overviews Maths games Real life maths Problem solving / investigations Apps / website…details to follow Copy of slides and calculations framework available on school website

Main Activity Go and explore the relevant resources Read the cards or questions on the tables Try to solve any problems using the methods or apparatus available Feel free to chat to the teachers and ask any questions
