2 Presentation Overview Five Modules Presented: Hard and Soft Skills Advocacy and GAPS in Higher Education Barriers to Student Success Student Experiences Great Colleges to Work For 2

3 Hard and Soft Skills 3 In this section we will examine the answers to the question, “what hard and soft skills do you need CNM students to have and where are the biggest GAPS now?” This is the only question focusing on the future needs of the job market. This question was answered by Advisory members and the community.

5 What hard and soft skills do you need CNM students to have and where are the biggest GAPS now? 5 Business Skills: Students lack interview skills Do not know how to properly fill out an application or create a resume Need basic skills on working in a small business: cash flow, payroll, ordering supplies Relationship with Employers: More Apprenticeships, internships Have employers speak with students on what is needed of them to be able to get a job Life skills: Students need ambition, confidences They need to know the benefits and value of an education Need to be able to take accountability, have professionalism and timeliness Unprepared: Need proper grammar skills, presentation skills Need basic training in writing, communicating and math

6 Advocacy and GAPS in Higher Education 6 In this section we will look at four questions pertaining to advocacy, challenges, and GAPS in higher education. These questions were answered by K-12 partners, Higher Education partners, legislators, local government, judges, and community leaders. After individual consideration, we will look at the commonalities among all four questions.

12 Marketing/ Increased Information: The public needs an increased awareness of CNM and the programs offered Students and the community need to understand the value of a degree The community needs to be shown our data, especially the return on investment K-12 students need to have information on higher education continually and constantly re-enforced to them Understand Student Needs: Need to figure out how to get students to stay in school Advisors are out of touch with employers Need to start speaking to students earlier about the expectations of higher education Pathways: Clear pathway between high school to college, between CNM and 4 year institutions, between degree and job Schedule: More classes offered at more times and at remote campuses, including Dual Credit and Career Technical options Support: More general student support services, mentoring of at risk students Support of K-12 partners More CNM Connect offerings Commonalities among ALL education partners 12

13 Barriers to Student Success 13 In this section we are going to examine the responses to the question, “what are the barriers to students staying and completing their goals?” We will look at responses to the question from the perspective of employees and students. Finally, we will take a look at how they are similar and different.

16 Employees vs. Students 16 Both cite financial reason as the largest barrier That is where the commonalities stop Students begin to feel that that issues surrounding school and their access to education as big barriers Employees feel that the larger barriers are have to do with factors outside of higher education and preparation for college

17 Student Experience 17 In this section we will examine four questions posed to the students. All questions pertain to the education they receive at CNM and ways to improve upon it. No commonalities will be discussed in this section.

21 Great Colleges to Work For 21 The final section will examine what CNM employees have to say about working at CNM and what would make CNM a best place to work. After looking at each individually, we will look at the commonalities. At the end of this section we will take a look at some standout responses.

25 Increase Pay/ Incentive Pay: Living wages, cannot live on the pay in this economy Incentive based pay based on how well one works Annual Raises Employee Bonding/ Social Activities: More social and employee activities, non-work related Getting to know colleagues better so that one can form a social and educational resource in them Benefits and Services: Parental leave, paid maternity leave, paternity leave Educational benefits: tuition reimbursement Make employees aware of the benefits available to them Free physical fitness center Free parking Appreciation/ Respect: Respect each other, Equal treatment and fairness to all employees Employee appreciation, feeling valued and respected from upper management Recognition of merits, and employee skills Commonalities among Employees 25

26 Standout Responses 26 Provide the necessary tools to empower staff members to provide customer service Working from home, more flexible schedules during slower periods Faculty have a lack of office space, different poorer facilities for part timers Free parking, coffee Listen to staff,students and faculty faculty support: collaboration on things outside of the classroom, sabbatical programs, freedom to create how lessons are delivered, more meaningful evaluations, autonomy to teach and design courses Open communication between all employees, communication from leadership, clear communication Educational attainment should be honored and recognized
