Introduction People need safe and efficient means of exit in an emergency –It is important to know the location of at least 2 exits Potential hazards must be recognized and correct responses understood –Knowing what to do before an emergency can save lives and prevent injury Knowledge of site specific procedures is required

4. Applicable Standards and Procedures Regulatory –OSHA 29 CFR 1910 General Industry, Subpart E –NFPA 101-1970, Life Safety Code –Local Building Codes Site Specific Procedures –May be defined by site owner –Applicable to NYMC employees, faculty, students, visitors, and contractors

5. Exit Routes Fundamental Requirements –Safe building design with sufficient exits –Unobstructed exit routes maintained –Exits clearly visible or route kept posted –Emergency escape route posted

6. Exit Routes Components to a safe exit –Exit Access –Exit –Exit Discharge –Designated Assembly Area

7. Exit Access Way by which a person reaches the exit Aisles and Corridors –All aisles and corridors must be kept clear - a minimum of 28 inches width is required Stairwells –Stairwells must be kept clear, nothing can be stored in a stairwell Minimum 28 inches
