1 Combustion engines main principles and definitions
Reciprocating combustion engines architecture Reciprocating engines dynamic properties Engine components and systems The engine management system for gasoline and Diesel engines The emission Requirements & Technology Engine vehicle integration 7.1 Engine layout and mounting 7.2 Engine-vehicle cooling system 7.3 Intake system 7.4 Exhaust system

2 Main functions The main function of an engine intake system is to deliver combustion air to the engine. To condition the air, just particulate removal, to protect engine parts from airborne impurities (dirt and other particulate matter). To reduce noise transmitted from the engine intake. To give a positive contribution to the engine performance Composition The intake snorkel (opening for the intake air to enter the system) Tube leading to the air filter (“dirty air line”) Air filter Tube leading to the engine (“clean air line”) Air mass flow meter Throttle body Resonator (silencer) to minimize the noise entering the cabin Blow by inlet

3 Typical engine intake system

4 Intake system main design guidelines
5.0 ¸ 5.5 l/l of engine displacement Resonator Sizing for intake noise reduction Technology / costy Mean air flow rate (depending on engine diaplacement) Airborn impurity (vehicle mission) Replacemnet interval Filter volume function of

5 Intake system main design guidelines
Example of the relation among filtering surface, dust concentration and service interval (air flow rate 220 m3/h)
