3 MISSION The goal of HBCU’s were to educate and train African Americans to become productive citizens. Most HBCU’s focused on teacher education while some focused on trades such as agriculture.

6 FYI Most graduates of HBCU’s go on to become teachers even to this very day.

7 FIRST HBCU The very FIRST HBCU was established before Reconstruction. The African Institute in Pennsylvania, was later renamed after its owner George Cheyney. It is known today as simply Cheyney University.

12 NUMBERS & LOCATION There are a total of 105 HBCU’s Almost all HBCU’s are located in states that were once “slave states” during the Civil War.

33 SCORES & ACCEPTANCE MANY HBCU’S LOWER THEIR REQUIREMENTS AND STANDARDS TO ALLOW LESS THAN AVERAGE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO GET ACCEPTED.

39 COSTS HBCU’s are not as expensive as “OTHER” colleges and universities. Several scholarships, awards, and programs are available for those who choose to attend a HBCU.

41 United Negro College Fund All Black organization that provides funding for black students to attend HBCU’s ONLY !!!!!!!!!

42 TOM JOYNER Radio talk show host Tom Joyner always gives money to help Black students attend HBCU’s on the air.

45 COSTS If you can’t afford to pay for school yourself, you can apply for financial aid. The less money your parents make; the more you can receive.
