3
Why Are We Focused on STEM?
4
The primary goal of STEM education is helping students be able to solve problems and come up with creative, viable solutions wherever their interests and talents lie.
5
By providing a strong STEM education, students will realize their full potential in more productive and creative ways.
6
We will use STEM to help our students be strong, independent thinkers and learners.
7
The Engineering Design Process Students will use the Engineering Design Process to take their learning to the highest levels of rigor and relevance.
8
The Engineering Design Process ASK IMAGINEPLANCREATEIMPROVE
9
The Engineering Design Process Our 3 rd Grade Team integrates Math and Science content using The Engineering Design Process to develop challenges for our students that focus on problem solving and purposeful student collaboration.
10
ASK What is the problem? What have others done? What are my constraints? The Engineering Design Process
11
What are some solutions? Brainstorm ideas. Choose the best idea. Imagine The Engineering Design Process
12
Plan Draw & Label a Diagram. Make a list of materials I will need. The Engineering Design Process
13
Follow my plan. Build my design. Test it out. Create The Engineering Design Process
14
How can I make my design better? Try again. Improve The Engineering Design Process
15
Mathematics 3 rd Graders will use math skills involving estimation, logical reasoning, measurement, computation and more during their challenges.
16
Technology 3 rd Graders will utilize technology to conduct research, work with data and present their findings.
17
STEM Notebook All 3 rd Graders keep a STEM notebook to record their observations, data, plans and designs.
18
TEAM WORK 3 rd Graders will work in collaborative teams, developing critical communication skills as they cooperate to solve problems connected to real-world events.
19
HANDS- ON Activities Our 3 rd Graders will be engaged in “hands-on” activities requiring many materials to complete their investigation and construct a design or product.
20
Collecting Materials Families can help by saving and sending materials to school such as: Paper towel rolls Salt, Rice or Beans Latex Gloves Toy Cars Masking Tape or Painter’s Tape Card Stock
21
Collecting Materials Marbles Water Bottles (All Sizes) 2 Liter Bottles Strainers and Colanders Paper Plates and Plastic Cups Coffee Filters Clear Packing Tape Food Coloring
