Can someone take their case direct to a barrister? Originally everyone had to go to a solicitor first (solicitor would then brief barrister) Bar Direct – some professionals could brief a barrister directly September 2004 – direct access for all in all civil cases Still no direct access for criminal or family work.

Can apply to become QC after 10 years as barrister or solicitor with an advocacy qualification. Used to be appointed by the Lord Chancellor Selection is now made by an independent selection panel after application by lawyers
