Underground to Canada Ellen Phillips

Taken away from her mother by a ruthless slave trader, all Julilly has left is the dream of freedom. Every day that she spends huddled in the trader’s cart travelling south, or working on the brutal new plantation, she thinks about the land where it is possible to be free, a land she and her friend Liza may reach some day. So when workers from the ‘underground railway’ offer to help the two girls, they are ready. But the slave catchers and their dogs will soon be after them. Summary

Memorable Quote "There’s a place the slaves been whisperin’ around called Canada. The law don’t allow no slavery there. They say you follow the North Star, and when you step onto this land you are free...” Page 12 This was said by Julilly’s mother to Julilly to explain about freedom for the slaves in Canada.

Time Period This novel takes place somewhere between 1840 and1870 when over 100,000 slaves traveled via the Underground Railroad from the southern United States into Canada and freedom.

Historical Facts 1.Alexander Ross was a Canadian and an abolitionist posing as an ornithologist who helped slaves by giving them money for travel via the Underground Railroad 2.Levi Coffin from Ohio, was a conductor for the Underground Railroad

Historical Facts 3. Slaves worked from sun up to sun down, were treated badly and lived in substandard conditions 4.The slaves were uneducated and passed on code about methods of travel by singing negro spirituals For example, ‘Follow the Drinking Gourd’ was really referring to ‘the north star.’

Research Many clever and creative ideas helped slaves during their escape. When abolitionist John Fairfield needed to sneak 28 slaves over the roads near Cincinnati, he hired a hearse and disguised the group as a funeral procession Harriet Tubman was born a slave on the eastern shore of Maryland, and fled north to freedom. There she joined the secret network of free Blacks and white sympathizers who helped runaways - the "underground railroad." She became a 'conductor" who risked her life to lead her people to freedom. Tubman returned time after time to her native Maryland, bringing out her relatives and as many as 300 other slaves.
