What was it? O Network of secret routes and safe houses O Used to help African-Americans go north (free states and Canada) O Slaves wanted to escape slavery in the South O Not underground nor a railroad

How many escaped O About 100,000 between 1810 and 1850

How did they make it? O Traveled at night O Used disguises O Followed the North Star O Not many made the journey due to the dangers

Who helped on the railroad? O Free slaves- Frederick Douglas O White abolitionists- one who tries to end slavery O Philanthropists O Quakers

Key Terminology O Stations: homes and businesses that harbored runaway slaves O Stationmaster: owned the stations O Conductor: moved the fugitives from one station to another O Stockholders: contributed money and goods

Harriet Tubman? O Most famous conductor O Former slave who returned 19 times to bring slaves to freedom O Brought more than 300 slaves to freedom

Consequences? O Those who helped runaways fined thousands of dollars O More dangerous if caught helping slaves escape while in a slave state O Prison, whipping, hanging, burning O White men received harsher punishments than white women

Why did people help? O North didn’t believe in slavery O Wanted to stop the spreading of slavery O Willing to risk death for beliefs

Negative Impacts? O Used to bring escaped slaves back into slavery O Black men/women kidnapped and hidden in homes/barns until they were sold as slaves O Oftentimes free African-Americans got sold into slavery
