8 Matariki and Key Competencies Relating to others From a non-Maori teaching perspective

9 Key Competencies through the eyes of Matariki Relating to others Relating to others is about interacting effectively with a diverse range of people in a variety of contexts. This competency includes the ability to listen actively, recognise different points of view, negotiate, and share ideas. Students who relate well to others are open to new learning and able to take different roles in different situations. They are aware of how their words and actions affect others. They know when it is appropriate to compete and when it is appropriate to co-operate. By working effectively together, they can come up with new approaches, ideas, and ways of thinking. P12 NZC

10 Respecting each others differences One of the ways in which we learned to appreciate each others differences was to do a homework Inquiry task, in which children interviewed their families about their ‘hidden talents’. From this we had a ‘data base’ of our families’ expertise. Then we had to ask if they would come and share with us in our class room.

11 Using Inquiry for inclusive education, and bring our community experts into our classroom to enrich the learning experiences for Matariki. ‘Relating to others is about interacting effectively with a diverse range of people in a variety of contexts.’
