5 Equations? Density = mass OR mass ÷ volume. volume Units for density: g cm 3 Why is this the unit for density? unit for mass divided by unit for volume ALWAYS REMEMBER UNITS!

6 Sample 1: (Easy) Frank has a paper clip. It has a mass of 9g and a volume of 3cm 3. What is its density? Step 1. Write the formula D = M V Step 2: Substitute in what you know. D = 9 g 3 cm 3

7 Step 3: Solve for unknown variable. Step 4: Label your answer D = 9 g 3 cm 3 D = 3g/cm 3 = 3 g/cm 3

8 Sample Problem #2 (Medium) You have a sample of plastic whose density is 0.78 g/cm 3 and has a volume of 4 cm 3. What is the mass of the plastic? Step 1. Write the formula D = M V Step 2: Substitute in what you know. 0.78 g/cm 3 = M 4 cm 3

10 Sample Problem #3 (Hard) You have a sample of silver whose density is 10.5 g/cm 3, and the mass of your silver is 3 g. What is the volume of the silver? Step 1. Write the formula D = M V Step 2: Substitute in what you know 10.5 g/cm 3 = 3 g V

12 Liquid Layers If you pour together liquids that don’t mix and have different densities, they will form liquid layers. The liquid with the highest density will be on the bottom. The liquid with the lowest density will be on the top. Video

13 Liquid Layers…. Check out this picture from your book. Which layer has the highest density? Which layer has the lowest density? Imagine that the liquids have the following densities:  10g/cm 3.3g/cm 3.  6g/cm 3.5g/cm 3. Which number would go with which layer?
