Materials and Resources What is embodied energy? The quantity of energy required to manufacture, and supply to the point of use including: Extraction Transportation Manufacturing Assembly Installation Some definitions also include disassembly & removal
7
Question Which of the following building materials commonly has the highest embodied energy? a.Brick b.Copper c.Aluminum d.Slate e.Glass

Embodied Energy http://www.greenhouse.gov.au/yourhome/technical/fs31.htm
10
How Does Embodied Energy Compare With Annual Operating Energy? Materials and Resources http://www.cmmt.csiro.au/brochures/tech/embodied/index.cfm For a typical office building: embodied energy = 10 to 30 times the annual operating energy
11
Materials and Resources What is life cycle cost? The cost of a material over its entire life span including: First Cost (manufacture & installation) Operation Maintenance Cost of Replacement Disposal or Salvage
12
What are some environmental considerations in material selection? Brainstorming
13
What are some environmental considerations in material selection? Brainstorming Affordability –Life cycle cost –Cost of alternatives Embodied Energy Durability & Maintenance Materials Efficiency –Reuse & recycle –Dimensional planning –Material management Resource Efficiency
14
Additional environmental considerations in material selection are: Brainstorming Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) –During construction –Initial occupancy –Over time Energy Efficiency Water Conservation Toxicity & Pollution –In building –In ecosystem
15
Intent: Facilitate the reduction of waste generated by building occupants that is hauled to and disposed of in landfills. Provide an area that is dedicated to the collection and storage of recycling, including paper, corrugated cardboard, glass, plastics and metals. Storage and Collection of Recyclables
16
Potential Technologies and Strategies: Coordinate the size and functionality of the recycling areas with the anticipated collection services. Consider employing cardboard balers, aluminum can crushers, recycling chutes and collection bins at individual workstations (or residential units.) Storage and Collection of Recyclables
17
Building Reuse
18
Intent: Extend the life cycle of existing building stock, conserve resources, retain cultural resources, reduce waste and reduce environmental impacts of new buildings as they relate to materials manufacturing and transport. Consider reusing existing walls, floors & roof and interior non-structural elements Building Reuse
19
Potential Technologies and Strategies: Consider reuse of previously occupied buildings. Remove elements that pose contamination and upgrade components that would improve energy and water efficiency such as windows, mechanical systems and plumbing fixtures. Building Reuse
20
Construction Waste Management
21
Intent: Divert construction and demolition debris from disposal in landfills and incinerators. Redirect recyclable recovered resources back to the manufacturing process. Redirect reusable materials to appropriate sites. Construction Waste Management Primary construction and demolition waste products are wood, asphalt/concrete/masonry, drywall, roofing, metals and paper products.
22
Consider recycling cardboard, metal, brick, acoustical tile, concrete, plastic, clean wood, glass, gypsum wallboard, carpet and insulation. Diversion may include donation of materials to charitable organizations and salvage of materials on-site. Potential Technologies and Strategies: Create a construction waste management plan that identifies the materials to be diverted and whether they will be source separated or commingled. Construction Waste Management
23
Carpet accounts for approximately 2% by volume of all municipal solid waste. Recycling was made easier by the content labeling program: www.interfaceinc.comwww.interfaceinc.com Credit Synergies: Construction waste management Recycled content Low-emitting material Tip
24
Intent: Reuse building materials and products in order to reduce demand for virgin materials and to reduce waste, thereby reducing impacts associated with the extraction and processing of virgin resources. Materials Reuse
25
Potential Technologies and Strategies: Identify opportunities to incorporate salvaged materials into building design and research potential material suppliers. Consider salvaged materials such as beams and posts, flooring, paneling, doors and frames, cabinetry and furniture, brick and decorative items. Materials Reuse
26
Material generated by end-users of the product Post-Consumer vs. Pre-Consumer (Post-industrial) material diverted from the waste stream during the manufacturing process. Excluded are materials capable of being reclaimed within the same process that generated it. Recycled Content
27
Intent: Increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials. Recycled content is defined in accordance with the International Organization for Standardization document ISO 14021-1999 Environmental Labels and Declarations— Self-Declared Environmental Claims (Type II Environmental Labeling) Recycled Content
28
Assemblies: In assemblies recycled content is determined by weight. Recycled fraction of the assembly is then multiplied by the cost of assembly to determine the recycled content value. Recycled Content
29
Regional Materials
30
Intent: Increase demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the use of indigenous resources and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation. Regional Materials
31
Use building materials or products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured, within 500 miles of the project site (based on cost of the total materials value). Regional Materials
32
Buildings: Structural Steel Concrete Masonry Glass and Glazing Gravel & Fill Interiors: Gypsum Wall Board Regional Materials Typical High-Cost Materials Furniture
33
What are some rapidly renewable building materials (made from plants harvested within a ten-year cycle or less)? Global b2b Network Cityfloors Designbuild-network.com Inhabitat.com Rapidly Renewable Materials
34
Intent: Reduce the use and depletion of finite raw materials and long-cycle renewable materials by replacing them with rapidly renewable materials. Potential Technologies and Strategies: Consider materials such as bamboo, wool, cotton insulation, agrifiber, linoleum, wheatboard, strawboard and cork. Rapidly Renewable Materials
35
Tips from the Pros Denim insulation performs well for both acoustical and thermal applications. Available with or without foil facing Also typically contains at least 90% post-industrial recycled content.
36
Certified Wood
37
Intent: Encourage environmentally responsible forest management. Certified Wood Includes but isn’t limited to structural framing and general dimensional framing, flooring, sub-flooring, wood doors and finishes.
38
Materials and Resources When we talk about embodied energy and life cycle cost in the operation and maintenance of existing buildings, to what are we referring? Items purchased for the every day operation of buildings (manufacture & installation). During tenant fit outs and retrofits, the purchasing and construction of building spaces.
39
What are some of the overarching goals of the Materials and Resource Category for existing buildings? Review Question
40
Answer: What are some of the overarching goals of the Materials and Resource category for existing buildings?
