Main Difference- temporary v. lifetime worker.

Indentured Servant Indenture= written contract; Servant= worker.
This contract is signed by the worker and the person they are working for. Why sign a contract? To make it official that you are carrying out your duties/job. Why are you working for someone? The person/family you are working for paid for your trip from Europe to the colonies, since you could not afford it.

Indentured Servant Benefits of indentured servants:
The servants live in the new colonies and then start out on their own. The people they work for have an inexpensive labor force. The colonies as a whole benefit by being populated.

Indentured Servant Most are white. Work according to gender:
Men- mostly worked outside in fields on farms, mostly small. Some could have specific jobs based on their occupations in Europe. Women- mostly worked indoors with childcare, cooking, cleaning, etc.

Indentured Servant Decrease in indentured servants over time:
Less push or pull factors Disillusionment- It is not what you expected. After your contract is up, you cannot financially make it on your own. Rebellious due to unhappiness. Bacon’s Rebellion
